Graduate Mentoring Initiative
Graduate Mentoring Initiative (GMI), a new mentoring program designed at fostering an engaged culture of faculty-graduate student mentoring across all academic disciplines. The mission of the GMI is to develop and sustain a faculty mentor training program that showcases lived experiences and resources at UC Davis, as well as to promote our own recognized and renowned mentors as campus leaders who can engage with their colleagues in promoting the value and impact of positive mentoring experiences. UC Davis faculty, appointed Mentor Fellows, will lead the mentor program for the campus. This faculty-led model really facilitates discussions amongst faculty on best practices, helpful tools, and ways to grow and develop as mentors
Faculty Academy of Graduate Student Well-Being
This initiative will train faculty to deliver graduate student seminars on mental health and well-being within graduate programs. This course is based on the success of a course created by Professor Carolyn Dewa (Public Health, Psychiatry, and Behavioral Sciences) who developed a well-being course offered as a graduate seminar. This course has been offered to a number of graduate programs since 2019 and takes a public health approach to mental health promotion. It addresses skills to deal with common graduate school stresses by introducing graduate students to the scientific evidence regarding stress and tools for self-care. The skills introduced in this course can be used both personally and professionally

K-Club
NIH K series training grants (and similar grants from foundations) provide an opportunity for faculty in neurology and neurosurgery to set aside 50% or more of their effort for 2 to 5 years for mentored research training. The UC Davis Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery K club, initiated by Drs. Brooks-Kayal and Harsh in the summer of 2021, convenes monthly for discussions of best practices for applying for, engaging in, and transitioning from these training grants to an independent research career.
